A Birth Story in Pages: How Shani H. Documented Her Child's Birth with Mixbook
Some stories are too powerful to hang on the wall. They deserve a space that feels intimate, intentional, and sacred.
For Shani H., becoming a mother again through the experience of a water birth wasn’t just a milestone—it was a moment of strength, beauty, and transformation. And while she didn’t want to display the photos openly in her home, she knew they needed to be preserved.
Her solution? A Mixbook.
A Beautiful Way to Tell a Powerful Story
“I wanted an intimate way of looking back at my birth photos,” Shani shared. “When I came across Mixbook, I thought it was such a beautiful way of storytelling my birth for my daughters in years to come.”
Shani’s photo book became more than a keepsake—it became a visual legacy.
From the quiet anticipation to the raw and radiant arrival of her daughter Kaia, every moment was captured and curated in a way that felt deeply personal. With her 2.5-year-old daughter Romie present at the birth, the story was not just hers—it was theirs.
Designing with Intention
There were a lot of photos—each one layered with emotion and energy. But Mixbook’s tools made it simple for Shani to design a book that honored every part of the journey.
“I used images across both pages to draw you in, and then added multiple images to one page, layering them with borders to make each one stand out,” she explained. “Adding color to the background helped bring it all together.”
The result was a book that flowed like her story—powerful, peaceful, and full of detail.
“It was very easy and enjoyable making my Mixbook,” she added. “I needed a little help at one stage, but the Mixbook team were lovely and there to help right away!”
A Book That Brings the Moment Back to Life
Shani’s favorite part of her Mixbook? Watching her daughter Romie flip through the pages.
Romie was there the day her baby sister Kaia was born, and the book has become a treasured way for them to relive that experience together.
“My 2.5-year-old Romie loves looking through the Mixbook of her baby sister’s birthday,” Shani said. “I can’t wait to show her how magical her birth story was, one day and for years to come.”
In this way, Shani’s Mixbook isn’t just a photo album—it’s a bridge between past and future, between mother and child.
Advice for Other Mothers Documenting Their Stories
Shani encourages other moms to embrace their stories—fully and unapologetically.
“To capture it all! Birth is such a beautiful and empowering journey, one that should be captured and cherished.”
When it comes to designing your book, her advice is simple:
Make it your own.
“I had so much fun getting creative with my Mixbook,” she said. “I love how easy it was to tell my story, from adding multiple photos to one page and one photo across two. It’s now my favorite way of showcasing such an important event. It has become one of our absolute favorite picture books.”
